A snapshot of our impact

Cancer didn’t stop being a life-changing and life-threatening disease in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic. Thanks to our dedicated and passionate donors, Canadians were able to look to CCS to provide evidence-based information, compassionate support and hope for a brighter future.

Adapting to life during the COVID-19 pandemic

The role of the Canadian Cancer Society (CCS) in helping people affected by cancer has never been more important than it has been during the COVID-19 pandemic.

From the start of the COVID-19 pandemic in March 2020, Canadians have looked to CCS to provide evidence-based information, compassionate support and hope for a brighter future.

A transformational partnership

On the eve of World Cancer Day, the Canadian Cancer Society (CCS) and Prostate Cancer Canada (PCC) finalized their amalgamation. This transformational partnership was a bold and critically needed step forward within the cancer charity sector in Canada.

Background information on the CCS-PCC amalgamation and focus on parts of PCC mission that are continuing at CCS:

  • Advisory Council to improve cancer outcomes in Black Communities

  • Plaid For Dad (or another fundraising event)

  • Prostate cancer support groups/webinars

Prioritizing diversity and inclusion

Systemic racism impacts the people we serve, the research we fund, and the experiences of employees, volunteers and supporters of CCS. There are deep disparities in cancer risk, cancer care and in cancer research, with life and death consequences that cannot be ignored.

In 2020, CCS began a process to closely examine who we are and how we operate, rethink our processes and policies, and guide our interactions with our colleagues, volunteers, clients and supporters to be more equitable and inclusive.

Our first steps toward a more diverse, inclusive and equitable CCS included:

  • Sharing a public statement of solidarity outlining our commitment to addressing systemic racism in our organization

  • Forming a Diversity and Inclusion Council of CCS staff to examine CCS from an inclusion perspective, take a leadership role and shape the future of our organization through the lens of inclusion

  • Conducting a staff survey to better understand diversity and inclusion within our workplace and to understand racial issues that need to be addressed inside of CCS

  • Providing CCS staff with training on diversity, inclusion and reconciliation

  • Resuming the important work begun by Advisory Council to improve cancer outcomes in Black Communities

  • Working with our Advisory Council on Research, we will expand CCS’s Inclusive Excellence in Research Action Plan to include race and other equity factors.

  • Sharing our Underserved Roadmap with staff to provide a framework from which we can better understand and focus our mission programming to underserved populations, including those who experience systemic barriers in the healthcare system.

  • Hiring external consultants to conduct JEDI discovery process, identify themes and share recommendations for our organization

Looking ahead

As we begin to incorporate principles of JEDI into our organization in a deliberate and meaningful way, using the information gathered by our Diversity and Inclusion Council, as well as by our external consultants, the 2021-22 year will include:

  • Confirming a short-term JEDI plan, to be used while we prepare ourselves for the long term work ahead

  • Launching an internal JEDI microsite for CCS staff, featuring materials and resources

  • Planning for, and beginning to host, monthly education sessions for CCS staff

  • Begin JEDI data collection

  • Work to integrate JEDI with current work, including our strategic plan, culture work, community engagement, and research

  • Support staff who have experienced racist/ableist/heterosexist, etc. incidents, with a focus on harm reduction and healing, rather than compliance

Saving lives

We know that nearly 1 in 2 Canadians will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetimes. Your support is helping to prevent cancer, improve treatments through research, and advocate for policies to help make healthy living easier for all Canadians.

Coping with cancer

Quarantines and physical distancing measures, while necessary, isolated people with cancer from their family support network last year. This compounded the stress and anxiety that comes with a cancer diagnosis during treatment. At this time, Canadians looked to CCS to provide evidence-based information, compassionate support, and hope for a brighter future.
